Life#
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 25, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with İsmail Hakkı as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Aleppo (Halep). İsmail Hakkı then moved to Sivas from 1895 to 1901. The last posts were in Kavala from 1901 to 1904 and Eleftheroupoli (Pravişte) from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 900 in 1895/96, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Sivas, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 116,400 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
