Life#
Rıza Bey was born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Rıza also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1890/91, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1904/05 places Rıza in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Aleppo.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 400 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. In all, six years of salary come to 22,800 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
