Life#
Mustafa Nuri Efendi was born in Tarsus in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Nuri also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
Work began in Tarsus in 1900/01, at about 20, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Mustafa Nuri in Tarsus, the birthplace, as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. In 1906/07 the lists place Mustafa Nuri in Ağrı (Karakilise), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Ağrı, when one in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Tarsus doğumlu memurlar" by MUSTAFA TURŞUCU (2025) probably refers to Mustafa Nuri, since the name, the birthplace, the birth year and a place of service agree.
