Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Mehmet Emin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 27, in 1885/86, Mehmet Emin began work in Komotini (Gümülcine), paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Emin in Komotini as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came six places in 19 years, from Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) to Silifke, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1892/93. For 1898 to 1902 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Mersin in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 600 in 1892/93, as 3. Müdür in Feke, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 16 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
