Life#
Born in Kuşadası in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Mehmet Hulusi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Mehmet Hulusi had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Mersin in 1882/83, at about 27, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mehmet Hulusi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mersin, where the entries run to 1885/86. Next came Adana in 1886/87, then a return to Mersin from 1887 to 1906. The last post was in Yumurtalık in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 540 in 1906/07, as 3. Müdür in Yumurtalık, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less.
