Life#
Born in Kuşadası in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Hasan Rifat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Rifat also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kuşadası in 1897/98, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Hasan Rifat in Izmir (İzmir) as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1902/03. From 1903 to 1908 the annual entries place Hasan Rifat in Samos (Sisam).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 450 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Samos, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
