Life#
Muhittin Efendi was born in Ödemiş in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tithe official (aşar memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Muhittin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Muhittin began work in Ödemiş in 1894/95, at about 18, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Muhittin in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Izmir (İzmir).
