Life#
Born in Kula in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Ethem Efendi was the child of a council member (meclis azası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Ethem also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kula in 1893/94, at about 17, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Neapoli (Nasliç). The last posts were in Korçë (Görice) and Antakya from 1903 to 1906 and Aleppo (Halep) in 1906/07.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Neapoli, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less.
