Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mahmut Hilmioğlu Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Mahmut Hilmioğlu had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic and Persian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1896/97, Mahmut Hilmioğlu began work in Kirkuk (Kerkük), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Mahmut Hilmioğlu in Baghdad, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Basra from 1903 to 1905.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 400 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Basra, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 12,000 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
