Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Halil Hilmi Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Halil Hilmi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Baghdad in 1892/93, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Halil Hilmi in Al Diwaniyah (Divaniye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Mosul (Musul) from 1894 to 1898. From 1898 to 1905 the annual entries place Halil Hilmi in Baghdad, the birthplace, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1903/04 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Baghdad, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
