Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 13, in 1886/87, the official began work in Baghdad, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. Every annual entry from 1889/90 to 1906/07 places the official in Baghdad, the birthplace, first as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1893/94 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) and from 1898/99 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 700 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Baghdad, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
