Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Setran Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Setran had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 19, in 1888/89, Setran began work in Baghdad, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1906/07 places Setran in Baghdad, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1906/07 as Role Memuru.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as Role Memuru in Baghdad, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
