Life#
Mehmet Hulusi Efendi was born in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Hulusi began work in Arapgir in 1894/95, at about 19, paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmet Hulusi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Arapgir. Mehmet Hulusi then moved to Edirne from 1895 to 1902, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1896/97. The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) from 1902 to 1905 and Trabzon from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 800 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Trabzon, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
