Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Salih Celalettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Salih Celalettin had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1894/95, Salih Celalettin began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Salih Celalettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Salih Celalettin to Kartal in 1896/97, then İzmit from 1897 to 1905. Next came Gebze from 1905 to 1912, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1909/10. The last post was in Ayastefanos in 1912/13.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 800 in 1912/13, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Ayastefanos, when one in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1912/13.
