Life#
İbrahim Razıyyüttin Efendi was born in Shumen (Şumnu) in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Razıyyüttin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1881/82, İbrahim Razıyyüttin began work in İzmit, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1882/83 to 1903/04 places İbrahim Razıyyüttin in İzmit, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1891/92 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) and from 1902/03 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 1,000 in 1902/03, the peak, as 2. Müdür in İzmit, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 172,860 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
