Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Mehmet Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Rıza also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 22, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in İnebolu. Next came Kastamonu from 1893 to 1896, then İzmit from 1896 to 1901. The last posts were in Misir from 1901 to 1905.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 900 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Misir, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
