Life#
Born in Lovech (Lofça) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Salih Halit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Manisa in 1882/83, at about 16, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 142 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Salih Halit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mudanya. Salih Halit then moved to Bandırma and Karaağaç from 1893 to 1898, then Mürefte from 1898 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Trabzon from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 142 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 540 in 1898/99, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Mürefte, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
