Life

Mehmet Akif Efendi was born in Çorum in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Akif also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Çorum in 1904/05, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From 1905/06 to 1906/07 every annual entry places Mehmet Akif in Erzincan, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1906/07 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Mehmet Akif probably has an entry in "Sicil-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Çorumlu devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by HAYRETTİN ÖRS (2019) (the name and the birthplace agree).
