Life

Born in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Ahmet Müştak Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Müştak also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Ahmet Müştak began work in Hınıs in 1896/97, at about 17, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Ahmet Müştak in Erzincan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 280 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
