Mehmet Behiç Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) in 1887/88 (AH 1305). On record 1909 to 1911, 3 annual entries.

Life

Mehmet Behiç Efendi was born in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "defterdar". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Behiç also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Erzurum in 1903/04, at about 16, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. From 1909/10 to 1911 every annual entry places Mehmet Behiç in Erzurum, first as a candidate official (Mülazım), from 1911 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).

Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to a peak of 300 in 1911, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Erzurum, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 7,200 kuruş, 41 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1911.
