Life

Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1886/87 (AH 1304), Mehmet Safi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Safi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Aleppo in 1909/10, at about 22, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1909/10, places Mehmet Safi in Aleppo, the birthplace, as a candidate official (Mülazım). In 1911 the lists place Mehmet Safi in Gaziantep (Antep), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to a peak of 400 in 1911, as Muhabere Memuru in Gaziantep, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 8,400 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911.
