Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Ahmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Tevfik also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Tevfik began work in Damascus in 1901/02, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1908/09, every annual entry places Ahmet Tevfik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Suriye.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 350 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Suriye, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
