Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Veli Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Veli began work in Konya in 1892/93, at about 24, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Veli in Konya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Veli then moved to Karaman in 1897/98, then Kırklareli from 1898 to 1903. The last posts were in Xanthi in 1903/04 and Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık) in 1904/05.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 500 in 1904/05, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Malko Tarnovo, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 36,720 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
