Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mahmut Vehbi Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Mahmut Vehbi was taught by a private teacher and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 36, in 1899/1900, Mahmut Vehbi began work in Sille, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 36 or older. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Mahmut Vehbi as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Şile, where the entries run to 1902/03. For 1903 to 1905 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1905 to 1908.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Muharrerat Memuru in Şile, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 14,280 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
