Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places İsmail Hakkı in Eskişehir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1895/96. Next came Gemlik, Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Bitola (Manastır) from 1896 to 1902, with a rise to Mandapost Memuru in 1900/01. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1905.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 800 in 1900/01, as Mandapost Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years pay ended below where it began, 110 kuruş against 400. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
