Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1876/77, Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adapazarı, where the entries run to 1891/92. The last posts were in Eskişehir from 1892 to 1900.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 475 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Eskişehir, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 19 years of salary come to 80,400 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
