Life#
Born in Niš (Niş) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Süleyman Hulusi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman Hulusi also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1893/94, at about 24, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Süleyman Hulusi as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in Thessaloniki, where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1898/99. The last posts were in Mount Athos (Aynaroz) and Haydarpaşa from 1901 to 1906 and Beyoğlu in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 600 in 1902/03, as 3. Müdür in Mount Athos, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
