Life#
İbrahim Fahri Efendi was born in Niš (Niş) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Fahri also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 26, in 1892/93, İbrahim Fahri began work in Yemen, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with İbrahim Fahri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mocha (Muha), where the entries run to 1896/97. Next came Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1897 to 1909, with a rise to Levazim Dairesi. The last post was in Kosova in 1909/10. The farthest post, Mocha, lay about 3,900 km from Niš, and 2 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
