Life#
Born in Niš (Niş) in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Hasan Neşet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hasan Neşet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1882/83, Hasan Neşet began work in Aleppo (Halep), with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Hasan Neşet as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Aleppo, where the entries run to 1887/88, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1887/88. Hasan Neşet then moved to eight places in 13 years, from Homs (Humus) to Kıyıköy (Midye), with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1888/89. The last post was in Karaağaç in 1901/02. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 1,200 in 1888/89, as 1. Müdür in Homs, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
