Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1878, Ali Rıza began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Ali Rıza in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Kayalar. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1885. Next came Elassona (Alasonya), Sjenica (Seniçe) and Ioannina (Yanya) from 1885 to 1892, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1885/86 and to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1891/92, then a return to Kayalar from 1892 to 1894. The last posts were in Margilic in 1894/95 and Pristina in 1895/96 and Komotini (Gümülcine) from 1896 to 1898.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 500 in 1891/92, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Ioannina, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
