Life#
Muhittin Nuri Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Arzuhalci". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ohrid (Ohri) in 1878/79, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Muhittin Nuri in Debar (Debre) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Pogradec (İstarova) from 1900 to 1902, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 540 in 1900/01, as 3. Müdür in Pogradec, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 119,760 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
