Life#
Born in Lyaskovets (Leskofça) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa began work in Ödemiş in 1894/95, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mustafa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitola (Manastır). Mustafa then moved to Sjenica (Seniçe) from 1899 to 1901. The last posts were in Bitola again from 1901 to 1907.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 380 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Sjenica, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 37,320 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
