Life#
Ahmet Necip Efendi was born in Rethymno (Resmo) in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Necip also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Ahmet Necip began work in Crete (Girit) in 1889/90, at about 33, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 33 or older. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Ahmet Necip in Crete as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1891/92. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Necip to Aydın from 1892 to 1898, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti). The last posts were in Manisa in 1898/99 and Bayramiç in 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 600 in 1892/93, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Aydın, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. Over 11 years pay ended where it began, at 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
