Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Adil Efendi was the child of a clerk (katip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Mahkeme Kalemi in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 125 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, names Mehmet Adil in the Nufus Kalemi, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1901 to 1904. The last posts were in Skopje in 1904/05, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) and Suriye in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 125 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 400 in 1905/06, as Seyyar Memur in Suriye, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 24,600 kuruş, 34 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. Mehmet Adil received the Mecidi order.
