Life#
Mehmet Sadık Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1862/63 (AH 1279), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1880/81, Mehmet Sadık began work in Çarşamba, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mehmet Sadık as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kastamonu. Next came Samsun from 1883 to 1888. From 1888 to 1903 every annual entry places Mehmet Sadık in Bafra. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 475 in 1888/89, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Bafra, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less.
