Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Kadri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kadri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Kadri began work in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 11, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Kadri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Samsun. Kadri then moved to Trabzon and Elassona (Alasonya) from 1883 to 1886, then Büyükdere from 1886 to 1892. The annual lists then follow Kadri back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1895. From 1895 to 1907 every annual entry places Kadri in Kuruçeşme. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 800 in 1885/86, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Elassona, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
