Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mehmet Şevket Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Şevket began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 10, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Few began so young; 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 10 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmet Şevket as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kuruçeşme, where the entries run to 1902/03.
