Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Sadullah Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Sadullah began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1893/94 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Sadullah in the same post, official (Memur), in Tersanei amire.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Memur in Tersanei amire, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 40,800 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
