Life#
Şahabettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Şahabettin also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1892/93, Şahabettin began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Şahabettin in Kuruçeşme as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1903.
The salary went from 80 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 290 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 24,000 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
