Life#
Mehmet Reşid Efendi was born in Latakia (Lazkiye) in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Reşid also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Latakia in 1867/68, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmet Reşid in Acre (Akka) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Nablus from 1877 to 1880, then Istanbul from 1880 to 1896, with a rise to a post in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi). Mehmet Reşid then moved to Kuruçeşme in 1896/97. The last posts were in Galata from 1897 to 1902.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 600 in 1893/94, the peak, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 160,020 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02; the list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
