Life#
Yakup Efendi was born in Latakia (Lazkiye) in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Mimar". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1876/77, Yakup began work in Tarsus, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Yakup in Tarsus as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1879/80. The annual lists then follow Yakup to Tripoli (Trablusşam), Tiberias (Taberiye), Al-Salt (Salt) and Beirut (Beyrut), four places in nine years, then back to Latakia, the birthplace, from 1889 to 1893. For 1882 to 1885 the lists have no entry. Next came a return to Tarsus from 1893 to 1895. From 1895 to 1906 the annual entries place Yakup again in Beirut.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 500 in 1885/86, the peak, as Memur in Al-Salt, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 102,840 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
