Life#
Born in Elazığ in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Refik Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Refik also knew four languages, Arabic, French, Persian and Turkish, all in writing, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan Refik began work in Mardin in 1884/85, at about 6, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; 3 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 6 or younger. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, 31 worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1895/96, to 1898/99, every annual entry places Hasan Refik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Elazığ, the birthplace.
