Life#
Born in Elazığ in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a clerk (katip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Adilcevaz in 1899/1900, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). The last posts were in Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1902 to 1905 and Muğla in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 14,400 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
