Life#
Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Kunfuda in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). At about 13, in 1891/92, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Aleppo (Halep), with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for ten years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Mehmet Şükrü in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Aleppo and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1902 to 1906 and As-Suwayda (Süveyda) in 1906/07, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Posta Memuru in Beirut, when half the paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 450 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
