Life#
Nuri Fehmi Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Nuri Fehmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Aleppo in 1886/87, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Nuri Fehmi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1890/91. Next came Antakya, Zor, Raqqa (Rakka) and Kilis, four places in seven years. From 1898 to 1904 the annual entries place Nuri Fehmi again in Aleppo, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1903/04 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 900 in 1903/04, as 2. Müdür in Aleppo, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
