Life#
Born in Hillah (Hille) in 1877/78 (AH 1294), Abdullah Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdullah also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
Work began in Hillah in 1892/93, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Abdullah in Baghdad (Bağdat) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in Al Diwaniyah (Divaniye) from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 460 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Al Diwaniyah, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 33,480 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
