Life#
Yosef Arya Efendi was born in Rumeli sarki in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Yosef Arya also knew four languages, Bulgarian, French, Greek (Rum) and Persian, all in writing.
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 35, paid from the start, on 1,000 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 35 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Yosef Arya in the same office, Tercume Odasi, in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 1,020 in 1900/01, the peak, in the Tercume Odasi in Beyoğlu, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. On average the pay stood in the top 12 per cent of each year's paid officials; fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
