Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Rumeli sarki in 1845/46 (AH 1262), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Tevfik also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Lom in 1868/69, at about 22, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Mehmet Tevfik in Hadımköy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Tevfik then moved to Keşan in 1879/80. The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1892. From 1892 to 1904 every annual entry places Mehmet Tevfik in Istanbul, with a rise to factory official (Fabrika Memuru).
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1878 to 700 in 1893/94, the peak, as Fabrika Memuru in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
