Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Mehmet Bahaettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Bahaettin also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Bahaettin began work in Istanbul in 1884/85, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Mehmet Bahaettin as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu. Next came Sirkeci and Edirne from 1890 to 1893, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1892/93, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1893 to 1899. The last posts were in Fasatu from 1899 to 1901 and Zliten from 1901 to 1903, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1899/1900.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 1,080 in 1901/02, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Zliten, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
