Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Mehmet Ferit Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a colonel (miralay). Mehmet Ferit had 12 years of schooling, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 19, paid from the start, on 170 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Mehmet Ferit in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi). From 1888 to 1903 every annual entry places Mehmet Ferit in Beyoğlu, with a rise to a post in the Tercume Odasi.
Pay rose from 170 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 700 in 1899/1900, in the Tercume Odasi in Beyoğlu, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
